ASUU and FG deadlocked in latest meeting October 16 2020 as the academic union of universities and the Nigerian senate meet again over the ongoing strike

Recall that the Nigerian universities had been shut down since February 2020 as a result of the ongoing strike from the university union

The situation escalated with the emergence of the coronavirus pandemic which led to the shutdown of all aspects of the country

But earlier this month the federal government of Nigeria issued an order which allowed schools to reopen nationwide

The order stated that the Nigerian schools on all levels can be reopened fully from the 12th of October 2020

This led to calls that the academic union of universities should negotiate with the government of Nigeria and reopen universities

But yesterday there was a closed door meeting between the academic union of universities and the senate

The meeting was hinged on the IPPIS system of Payment of lecturers in all universities all over the country by the federal government

This system of Payment was rejected by the academic union of universities (ASUU) citing reasons that the system cannot be sustained

Yesterday, Thursday, October 15, 2020 the academic union of universities met with the federal government of Nigeria represented by Minister Chris Ngige

The meeting lasted over four hours and there was no concrete resolution between the two parties yesterday

This is a meeting which saw the federal government of Nigeria agree to pay ASUU a sum of 30 billon naira in earned allowances

The Academic union of universities also presented their own proposed system of Payment known as UTAS which is currently under testing by the FG

Although the federal government of Nigeria and ASUU are set to meet again on Wednesday, 21st, October 2020, the signs are that progress is being made
