Okonjo-Iweala Emerges DG of WTO
Former Nigerian Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is the new Director-General of the World Trade Organization.
She emerged the winner defeating her rival finalist, the South Korean Minister of Trade – Yoo Myung-Hee, after she got 104 votes in the poll of a possible 164 from the member countries.
By winning this election, she has added another record and etched her name in the history books once more by becoming the first female, first Nigerian and first African person to occupy the prestigious position.
Speaking in an interview on Friday, she had already disclosed that the African Union (AU) that is made up of 54 member countries had endorsed her over Yoo Myung-Hee.
The Official Announcement is to made by the World Trade Organization by 3pm Nigerian time today.
