USA Unsupportive of Okonjo-Iweala as DG
The United States of America, USA, has stated that it would not support Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s emergence as the new Director-General of the World Trade Organization.
She is widely supported by many countries, including those of the African Union (AU) and European Union (EU) but the United States isn’t one of her supporters.
According to reports; The Deputy USA Trade Representative Dennis Shea, reportedly said that the US could not support a decision to appoint Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
He also allegedly said that they (USA) do not agree with the way the process of the appointment was carried out.
Also, Robert Lighthizer, the Trade representative of the USA has also made known his support for her rival candidate, Yoo Myung-Hee, the Minister of Trade for South Korea. He opines that the former Nigerian Minister of Finance has a very close relationship with some pro-trade internationalists
