Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike rescues former NDDC Managing Director, Joy Nunieh, from policemen trying to break into her house earlier today.
In a video circulating on Social media, the governor’s convoy was seen at the entrance of Nunieh’s house in Port Harcourt as he came to the rescue of the former NDDC boss.
Mrs Nunieh was expected to appear at the of House of Representatives’ Committee hearing on corruption in the Niger Delta Development Commission in Abuja today. But she couldn’t make it because of Armed Policemen surrounding her House. She remained indoors till Governor Wike intervened.
The state government, in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Paulinus Nsirim, said,
“We wish to state that while we are not interested in identifying with the present unfolding drama in the NDDC; we will not, however, fail to protect our daughter from actual harm or perceived danger.”
“The state owes it as a duty to protect her citizens from danger no matter their political affiliation, and we cannot fold our arms and watch anyone harm her or indeed any Rivers citizen. We advise those involved in the present altercations in the NDDC to thread with caution in their actions and utterances.”
The Ex-managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission who later narrated the incident to the press at government House, said that the police men wanted to abduct her without a warrant.
“They (policemen) started trying to break the security door. Because it was a security door, they spent time to try to break the door.”
“Before, I asked them of their warrant of arrest and they said they didn’t have any. I then said I cannot go with any of the policemen. I need to see the warrant of arrest. We are not in a banana republic.”
“So, my governor came and sent them out; and said why would they come to arrest a woman like an armed robber? My governor told them that they should leave the compound. I am safely here with my governor in Government House, Port Harcourt.”
The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, senator Godswill Akpabio is yet to comment on the incident.
